91 Remove
Yourself From Mailing Lists
We get inundated with
paper as well as electronic reading material of all sorts.
It seemed like a good idea at the time but when this
material piles up and piles up, it can really clog up your
desk, computer and mind.
If you don’t get to it
within 30 days of receiving the material, the chances you
will actual read it are pretty nil. Give some serious
thought to getting off these list and subscriptions, free up
your time for activities that still currently interest
you.
92 Its Not Enough
Too Be Busy
Busy work is not
necessarily good or productive work. Even putting in a good
days work these days is not sufficient reason to celebrate.
With pressures from all side to do more, get more done in a
shorter period of time, better productivity, we have to ever
vigilant about what we do with the limited time we have
available to do it in.
It’s easy to get off track
and get caught up in what I call the busy work, phones,
filing, admin, paperwork, appointments, meetings, etc
etc. As
important as these tasks are, you have to keep the ratio of
doing these tasks in proportion to the tasks that move core
issues forward. Balance is the key in this
area.
93 Start Thinking
About Creating Your Own Culture
This is a little fancy for
me, I don’t usually get into this territory but this one is
a real issue. Over time you are going to develop a style, a
way of going about doing things. You hear about companies
creating there culture and how it helps them to clarify
things. It would not hurt to give some thought to how you
want to conduct yourself and how you want to inter act with
those around you.
I have a specific style
that some people find, what the word I’m looking for here
…is. Hmm, how about irritating! That’s okay; the people who
call me irritating are also some of my biggest fans so it
works out in the end.
94 Worrying is
Very Hard Work and A Huge Time Waster
Of all the emotions we deal
with, worrying can cause us the most grief. The problem with
worrying is, in the end it accomplishes nothing, but leaves
a lot of damage in its path. It’s not unlike a tornado
leaving destruction in its path as it weaves its way through
our lives. When we worry, we get stressed, when we are
stressed out, we accomplish much less, do what we do not
nearly as well, as normally and tend to get taken off our
planned agenda.
When you analyze what
worrying causes, you start to realize that working on
reducing this emotion can, in one foul swoop head off a
whole host of potential problems. Worrying comes from a lack
of confidence in your self and the course of action you are
embarking on. One way to help reduce this situation is to
adopt a system or program you feel
works for you and install it into your every day
operations.
95 Is It
Important or Is It Urgent?
This question plays a big
role in how you respond to issues that come up on a daily
basis. The simplest way to separate them is this way;
important is something you have to decide on. Urgent on the
other hand is something some one else is trying to decide
for you. For example, it’s important that you visit a
specific customer of yours tomorrow. On the other hand, some
one comes into your office and says it urgent that you speak
to them on a topic that you are totally unfamiliar with.
Could be important to you but it certainly isn’t urgent as
far as you are concerned. Important is usually to
the benefit to you, urgent to the person presenting the
problem or issue to you.
A general rule of thumb,
important, good, urgent bad, at least as far as you are
concerned.
